Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply online before travel
You need a Vietnam eVisa before you fly. Apply at evisa.xuatnhhapcanh.gov.vn — the official government portal. The fee is $25 USD for single entry or $50 USD for multiple entry, valid for up to 90 days. Processing takes 3 working days, so apply at least a week before departure.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Austrian passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Vietnam. No minimum validity beyond that is required by law, but airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before booking.Required
Return or onward ticket
Immigration may ask for proof
Immigration officers at Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready. If you're flying in on a one-way ticket, you might be denied boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host ready. Immigration rarely asks, but budget airlines sometimes check at check-in.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Carry at least $500 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing sufficient funds. Immigration rarely checks, but it's a standard requirement on paper.Recommended
Visa-free for 45 days
Austrian passport holders can enter Vietnam without a visa for up to 45 days. If you're staying longer, you need the eVisa. The 45-day period starts the day you land.
Passport validity is strict
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. Count from the day you arrive, not your departure. If it's close, renew first.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Vietnamese eVisa website (evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn). Fill in your personal details, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee (around $25 USD) with a credit card. Processing takes 3-5 business days.
2
Receive your eVisa approval
You'll get an email with your eVisa approval letter. Print it out and also save a PDF on your phone. The letter has a QR code that immigration will scan.
3
Arrive at a Vietnamese airport
At the airport, go to the immigration counter. Hand over your passport, the printed eVisa, and your boarding pass. They'll scan the QR code, stamp your passport, and let you through. No extra forms needed.
4
Show your return ticket and accommodation
Immigration may ask to see your onward flight booking and first night hotel confirmation. Have them ready on your phone or printed. This is quick — just a glance.
