Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your Australian passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Luxembourg. Schengen rules do not require 6 months beyond departure, but your airline may enforce it — check with them before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for Schengen entry
Immigration officers at Luxembourg and other Schengen airports check for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — budget airlines often ask at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a signed letter from your host with their address and contact number. Officers rarely ask, but if they do, you need it on the spot.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Have a recent bank statement or credit card showing you can cover your stay. There is no fixed minimum for Luxembourg, but around €50–€100 per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Schengen area rules apply
Luxembourg is part of the Schengen area. Your 90-day visa-free stay counts across all 29 Schengen countries. If you've already spent time in France, Germany, or Italy earlier in the year, that time counts toward your 90-day limit.
No visa needed — just show up
Australian passport holders have one of the easiest paths into Luxembourg. No visa application, no fees, no embassy visit. Just a valid passport and a return ticket.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Luxembourg Airport (LUX)
You'll land at Findel Airport, about 15 minutes from the city centre. Follow signs to 'Passport Control' for non-EU arrivals.
2
Queue at the non-EU passport control
Join the line for 'All Passports' or 'Non-EU'. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer will check your passport, stamp it, and wave you through. It usually takes 1–2 minutes per person.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim. Then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no goods to declare. That's it — you're in Luxembourg.

Frequently asked questions

No, not without a visa or residence permit. The 90-day limit applies to the entire Schengen area (29 European countries). Once you've used your 90 days, you must leave for 90 days before returning. You cannot extend a tourist stay in Luxembourg.
No. If you're transiting through Luxembourg Airport and staying airside (not passing through passport control), you don't need a visa. But if you need to enter Luxembourg for any reason — even a few hours — the visa-free rules apply.
You will likely be denied boarding by your airline or refused entry at the border. Renew your passport before you travel. There are no exceptions for short trips.
Technically, the visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, and family visits — not for remote work. In practice, short-term remote work is usually tolerated, but if you're staying for weeks and working full-time, you may need a digital nomad visa or work permit. Check with the Luxembourg immigration office if unsure.
If you're staying in a hotel, the hotel registers you automatically. If you're staying in private accommodation for more than 3 days, you must register with the local commune (town hall) within 3 days of arrival. For short tourist stays, this is rarely enforced, but it's the law.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You may be fined, banned from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 3 years, or both. The fine varies by country but can be several hundred euros. Don't risk it.
Yes. There are no border checks between Schengen countries. You can drive or take a train from France, Belgium, or Germany without showing your passport. But you still must comply with the 90-day Schengen limit — the clock doesn't reset when you cross a border.
