Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Belgian passport only needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Bulgaria. Airlines sometimes ask for 6 months validity — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bulgaria
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — a booking confirmation email works fine.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from a friend in Bulgaria covers this. Keep a copy on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the visit
Bulgaria doesn't enforce a fixed minimum, but officers expect you to cover your stay. A recent bank statement or a credit card with available credit works.Recommended
Bulgaria uses the lev (BGN), not the euro
While Bulgaria is an EU member, it does not use the euro. The currency is the Bulgarian lev (BGN). Exchange rates are fixed at 1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN. Credit cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for smaller shops and taxis.
Overstaying the 90-day limit
Overstaying even by a day can result in a fine (around 500 BGN) and a re-entry ban. The 180-day period is calculated from your first entry. Keep track of your days using the Schengen calculator app.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Bulgarian border control
At Sofia Airport or any land border, join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport ready. The officer will check your passport validity and may ask for your return ticket or accommodation.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport. If asked, show your return ticket (screenshot is fine) and accommodation booking. Answer questions about your stay duration and purpose.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp determines your allowed stay. Check the date before walking away.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim (if flying) and then customs. No additional forms or declarations needed for standard tourist visits.

No, not for stays under 90 days. Hotels register you automatically. If staying in a private home, the host should register you within 3 days. For short visits, this is handled by the accommodation.
No, visa-free entry is for tourism and business meetings only. Remote work for a foreign employer is technically not allowed. For digital nomads, Bulgaria offers a separate long-stay visa (type D) for remote workers.
