Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
You get a 30-day single-entry visa on arrival at Egyptian airports (Cairo, Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Luxor, Marsa Alam). Pay $25 USD in cash (exact change) at the bank kiosk before the immigration counters. The visa is a sticker they put in your passport — keep the receipt until you exit.Visa infoRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Egypt
Egypt enforces the 6-month validity rule strictly at check-in and immigration. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding. Airlines also check this — no exceptions.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa on arrival
Immigration officers at Cairo and Hurghada ask for a return or onward ticket before issuing the visa on arrival. Have a printed copy or a digital booking on your phone. Budget airlines (EgyptAir, Air Cairo) also check this at check-in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to have hotel booking or invitation letter
Immigration rarely asks for it, but if you're flagged for secondary inspection, they'll want to see where you're staying. A hotel confirmation email or a letter from a host in Egypt works. Keep a copy on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to show you can support yourself
Not routinely checked, but if asked, show cash or a bank statement with at least $1,000 USD or equivalent. ATMs in Egypt dispense Egyptian pounds, not dollars, so bring some USD cash for the visa fee and initial expenses.Recommended
Visa on arrival is the easiest option
For a standard tourist trip, the visa on arrival is simpler and cheaper than an e-visa. No paperwork, no waiting — just cash and a valid passport.
Have cash ready before you queue
The bank kiosks don't accept cards. If you arrive without cash, you'll have to find an ATM (which dispenses EGP) and then try to exchange it — not straightforward. Bring USD 25 in cash.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the airport and go to the bank kiosk
After you land, follow signs to 'Bank' or 'Visa on Arrival' before you reach immigration. At Cairo Airport, the kiosks are right before the passport control hall. Pay USD 25 (or equivalent) and get a receipt.
2
Get your visa sticker
Take the receipt to the adjacent counter. The officer will stick the visa into your passport. It's a single-entry tourist visa valid for 30 days.
3
Proceed to immigration
Join the queue for foreign passports. Hand over your passport (with the visa sticker), your boarding pass, and your arrival card (usually given on the plane). They may ask for your hotel booking or return ticket — have them ready on your phone.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, go to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually no customs check for personal items. You're in.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, all international airports in Egypt offer visa on arrival for Belgian passport holders: Cairo, Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Luxor, Marsa Alam, and Alexandria. The process is the same everywhere.
USD 25 for a single-entry tourist visa. They also accept euros (about €22) or British pounds (£20). Have exact change if possible — kiosks sometimes run out of change.
Yes, you can extend it once for another 30 days. Go to the Passport and Immigration Office in your city (e.g., in Cairo it's on El-Tahrir Street in downtown). The fee is about EGP 1,000 (around USD 20). You'll need a passport photo and a copy of your visa.
If you stay airside and your layover is under 12 hours, you don't need a visa. If you want to leave the airport, you need a visa on arrival (same process and fee).
The bank kiosks accept euros and British pounds, but not Egyptian pounds. There are ATMs after baggage claim, but they dispense Egyptian pounds — not useful for the visa fee. Best to bring USD or EUR cash from home.
No, the standard visa on arrival is single-entry only. If you need multiple entries (e.g., for day trips to Israel or Jordan), apply for an e-visa before you travel. The e-visa costs about USD 60 and allows multiple entries.
Usually 10–20 minutes total, including the bank queue and getting the sticker. At busy times (like late-night arrivals at Cairo), it can take up to 45 minutes. Still faster than applying in advance.
