Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Japan
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — it only needs to be valid for the duration of your stay. Airlines sometimes enforce the 6-month rule anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Japan
Immigration officers at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Enforcement varies by officer and airline, but having one printed or on your phone avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration rarely asks for hotel confirmations, but budget airlines and some check-in agents may request proof of where you're staying. Have a printed booking or digital confirmation ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Officers almost never ask for bank statements or cash for short visa-free stays. If questioned, a credit card or a few hundred dollars in cash is enough to satisfy them.Recommended

Digital pre-arrival registration
Register at vjw-lp.digital.go.jp before your flight — enter passport details, flight info, and customs declaration. You get a QR code that lets you use the fast lane at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai. Not mandatory, but saves 15–30 minutes in line.Register on Visit Japan WebOptional
6-month passport validity is strictly enforced
Japanese immigration checks your passport's expiry date from the day you enter, not your departure. If it's less than 6 months away, you may be refused entry. Renew your passport well in advance.
Visit Japan Web saves you time
Registering online before your flight lets you skip the paper forms at immigration and customs. It's free and takes about 10 minutes. Do it up to 2 weeks before you travel.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, check your passport validity (6+ months beyond entry date), print or save your return ticket and first-night hotel booking, and optionally register on Visit Japan Web. If you want an eSIM, buy it online beforehand so it activates on landing.
2
Arrive at a Japanese airport
You'll land at Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or another international airport. Follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Foreign Passports'. Have your passport, boarding pass, and any pre-filled QR code from Visit Japan Web ready.
3
Go through immigration
Join the queue for foreign nationals. An officer will check your passport, take your photo and fingerprints (digital), and may ask about your stay. Answer honestly — typical questions: 'How long are you staying?', 'Where are you staying?', 'What's the purpose of your visit?'.
4
Collect your luggage and clear customs
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. If you used Visit Japan Web, show the QR code at customs for a faster exit. Otherwise, fill out a paper customs declaration form.
5
Exit the airport
Once through customs, you're free to enter Japan. Your visa-free stay is valid for up to 90 days. Don't overstay — penalties include fines and deportation.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave Japan before the 90 days are up. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa (like a tourist visa extension or a long-stay visa) before your current stay expires, but these are rarely granted for tourism.
Overstaying is taken seriously in Japan. You could face a fine, deportation, and a ban from re-entering Japan for several years. Always leave on time or apply for a proper visa if you need more time.
If you're staying in the international transit area and not passing through immigration, you generally don't need a visa. But if you want to leave the airport (even for a few hours), you'll need to enter under the visa-free program or a transit visa. Check with your airline for specific rules at your transit airport.
No, it's optional. You can fill out paper forms on the plane or at the airport. But using Visit Japan Web saves time — you pre-submit your customs and immigration info, get a QR code, and skip the paper queue. It's free and takes about 10 minutes.
The visa-free program is for tourism and short business trips (meetings, conferences). If you plan to work remotely for a foreign employer, it's a grey area. Most short-term remote workers enter visa-free, but technically you're not supposed to engage in any work that benefits a Japanese entity. For clarity, check with the Japanese embassy.
You'll likely be denied boarding by your airline or refused entry by Japanese immigration. Renew your passport before you travel. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced.
It's risky. Immigration may ask for proof of onward travel. If you don't have a return or onward ticket, they might deny entry. Always book a return or onward ticket before you fly.
