Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity remaining from your date of entry into Malaysia. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Malaysia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward flight booking out of Malaysia. Have a printed or digital copy of your ticket ready — they may deny entry if you can't show one.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel reservation confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host in Malaysia. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or bank statement
Have at least 500 USD (or equivalent in MYR) available — cash, credit card, or bank statement. Immigration may ask to see proof you can support yourself during your stay.Recommended
MDAC is mandatory — don't skip it
All foreign visitors must complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online before arrival. It's free and takes 5 minutes. Submit it within 3 days before your flight. Without it, you may be delayed at immigration.
Overstaying is expensive
The 90-day visa-free stay is not extendable. Overstaying even one day can result in a fine of RM 500–1000 and possible deportation. Set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Malaysian immigration
At Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or other entry points, join the foreign passport queue. Have your passport, boarding pass, and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp you in for up to 90 days.
2
Complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC)
Before you arrive, fill out the MDAC online (free) at https://imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main. You'll need your flight details and accommodation address. Submit it within 3 days before your flight. Keep the confirmation email on your phone.
3
Prepare documents for inspection
At the counter, hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer may ask about your return ticket, accommodation, or purpose of visit. Answer clearly and briefly. The whole process usually takes 2–5 minutes.
