Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Nicaragua. Airlines at Brussels Airport will check this before boarding. No minimum validity beyond your stay is required by Nicaraguan law, but carry a copy of your passport data page separately.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Nicaragua
Immigration officers at Augusto C. Sandino International Airport routinely ask for a printed or digital onward ticket. A flight out of Nicaragua within 90 days of arrival satisfies this. Bus tickets to Costa Rica or Honduras also work if you're leaving overland.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have your first night's hotel confirmation ready on your phone or printed. If staying with friends, a simple letter from them with their address and phone number is accepted. Officers rarely ask, but when they do, they want to see a specific address.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry at least $500 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing available funds. Immigration may ask how you'll pay for your trip. Credit cards work too, but cash is preferred at land borders. ATMs in Managua dispense córdobas, not dollars.Recommended
Cash is king at immigration
The tourist card fee is cash only — USD or Nicaraguan córdobas. There's no ATM before immigration, so bring $15–$20 in small bills.
Check your entry stamp
The officer writes the allowed stay in your passport. Make sure it says 90 days (or whatever you were granted). If it's less, ask politely for the full 90.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration
At Managua International Airport (MGA) or any land border, join the 'Foreigners' queue. Have your passport, boarding pass, and return ticket ready.
2
Receive tourist card
The officer will issue a tourist card (Tarjeta de Turista) valid for up to 90 days. You may be asked to pay a small fee (around $10–$15 USD, cash only). Keep the card with your passport.
3
Passport stamped
The officer stamps your passport with your entry date and allowed stay. Check the stamp before leaving the counter.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags and proceed through customs. There's usually no customs declaration form for tourists.
