Belgian passport holders can enter Ukraine without a visa for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This has been the case since 2017 and remains in effect for 2026. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Ukraine
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity past your exit date from Ukraine. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding. No exceptions at the border.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Ukraine within 90 days
Immigration at Boryspil and Lviv airports routinely asks for a return or onward ticket showing you leave within 90 days. A bus or train ticket to Poland or Romania works too. Without one, expect a secondary interview.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a hotel reservation. A printed booking confirmation or a letter from a host (with their address and phone number) covers you. Airbnb receipts are accepted.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Ukraine doesn't publish a fixed amount, but carrying at least €50 per day in cash or a credit card statement helps. Border officers rarely check this for Belgian passport holders, but it's smart to have a bank statement ready.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Ukraine. Airlines check this at check-in, and immigration checks it at the border. If your passport expires sooner, you will not be allowed to board or enter.
No visa needed for 90 days
Belgian passport holders can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. This applies to tourism, business, and family visits. No prior application or fee is required.
eSIMs make connectivity easy
You can buy an Airalo eSIM before you travel and activate it the moment you land. No need to queue at a Kyiv airport SIM kiosk. Data plans start at around €5 for 1GB.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before travel
Print or save digital copies of your passport, return ticket, accommodation booking, and insurance. Keep them in a separate folder on your phone for quick access.
2
Arrive at the airport and check in
At Brussels Airport or any other departure point, the airline will check your passport validity and onward ticket. They may deny boarding if your passport has less than 6 months validity.
3
Go through passport control in Ukraine
At Kyiv Boryspil, Lviv, or Odesa airports, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Hand over your passport and be ready to show your return ticket and accommodation if asked. The officer will stamp you in — no visa needed.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually nothing to declare for personal items.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is strictly 90 days within any 180-day period. Extensions are not available for visa-free travellers. If you need to stay longer, you'd have to apply for a temporary residence permit before your 90 days expire — but that's a separate process and not guaranteed.
You will be denied boarding by the airline and refused entry at the border. Renew your passport before traveling. There are no exceptions.
No, Belgian passport holders do not need a visa for transit. You can stay in the international transit zone without a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport, you'll need the same visa-free entry conditions (passport validity, onward ticket).
Technically, the visa-free regime is for tourism, business, or family visits — not for employment. Remote work for a foreign employer is a grey area. Many digital nomads do it, but officially you're not allowed to earn income from a Ukrainian source. If you're unsure, check with the Ukrainian embassy.
Your passport is the main requirement. Officers may also ask for your return ticket and proof of accommodation. Have them ready on your phone or printed. They rarely ask for insurance, but it's smart to have it.
If you stay longer than 30 days, you must register your place of residence with the local migration office. For stays under 30 days, no registration is needed. Hotels often handle this for you if you're staying in one.
Overstaying can result in a fine, deportation, and a ban from re-entering Ukraine for up to 3 years. The fine is typically around 1,700 UAH (about €40) for a short overstay, but it can be higher. Avoid it by tracking your days carefully.
