Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Belgian passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Uruguay. No minimum validity beyond departure is required, but airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Uruguay
Immigration officers at Carrasco Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — a bus ticket to Argentina also works if you're leaving overland.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a host with their address and phone number covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Uruguay doesn't publish a fixed minimum, but carrying a credit card and some cash (around $100 USD per day) is standard. A bank statement or card with a visible limit works if asked.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Uruguay immigration checks passport validity from the day you enter, not your departure date. If your passport has less than 6 months validity left, you will be refused entry. No exceptions.
No visa, but still need proof of onward travel
Even though you don't need a visa, immigration may ask to see a return or onward ticket. Keep a screenshot on your phone or a printed copy handy.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at immigration
At Montevideo's Carrasco International Airport (MVD) or any land border crossing, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day entry. The process usually takes 2-5 minutes.
2
Present documents
Hand over your passport. If asked, show your return ticket (printed or on phone) and first night accommodation. Answer questions about your stay (purpose, length, where you're staying).
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the entry date and the maximum stay allowed (90 days). Check the stamp before leaving the counter — if the date is wrong, ask for correction immediately.
