Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay in Mauritius
Your passport needs at least one blank page for the entry stamp. Mauritius does not enforce a 6-month validity rule — your passport just needs to be valid for the duration of your stay. Airlines sometimes ask for 6 months anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Immigration officers routinely ask for proof of departure
You need a confirmed onward or return flight out of Mauritius. Immigration at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport checks this at the counter. A printed boarding pass or e-ticket works fine.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Immigration rarely asks for it, but if you arrive without a clear place to stay, they may question you. A printout or a screenshot on your phone is enough.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your trip. There is no fixed minimum amount, but around $100 USD per day is a safe benchmark. Immigration almost never asks for it for short stays, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Mauritius, not from your departure date. If it expires sooner, renew before you travel.
No visa extensions available
The 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. Plan your trip accordingly. Overstaying can lead to fines and future entry bans.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU)
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration'. There are separate queues for foreigners and Mauritian citizens. Join the foreigner queue.
2
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport (with at least 6 months validity and 1 blank page). The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. Answer clearly and politely.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a date allowing up to 90 days. Check the stamp before walking away — it shows your permitted stay end date.
4
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel.
