Schengen area rules apply
Your 90-day visa-free stay applies to the entire Schengen area (26 European countries). Days spent in any Schengen country count toward your 90-day limit. Keep track of your entries and exits — the clock resets only after you leave the Schengen area for 90 consecutive days.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Finnish border control will check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it's close to expiry, renew it before you travel. No exceptions are made.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Helsinki Airport (HEL)
After landing, follow signs to 'Passport Control' (non-EU queue). Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation proof ready. The officer will check your passport, ask about your trip purpose and length of stay, then stamp you in. The whole process usually takes 2-5 minutes.
2
Other entry points (ferry, train, land border)
If arriving by ferry from Stockholm or Tallinn, or by train from Russia (currently limited), you'll go through passport control at the port or station. Same rules apply — have documents ready. Queues are usually shorter than at the airport.
3
During your stay
You can move freely within the Schengen area (26 European countries) for up to 90 days total. Keep your passport with you at all times — Finnish police can ask for ID. Register with local authorities if staying longer than 90 days (but you can't extend a tourist stay).

No, for stays under 90 days you don't need to register. If you stay longer (which requires a residence permit), you must register with the local Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV) within 90 days of arrival.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You may be fined (typically €100-€300), and it can affect future visa-free travel to Schengen countries. In serious cases, you could be banned from re-entering for up to 5 years.
