Common Travel Area (CTA) rules
Ireland and the UK share the Common Travel Area. This means you can move freely between Ireland, Northern Ireland, the UK, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands without additional border checks. But your 90-day limit applies to the entire CTA — not just Ireland.
Overstaying is serious
The 90-day limit is strict. Overstaying even by a day can lead to a ban from the entire Common Travel Area. Set a reminder on your phone to leave before day 90.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, first night accommodation booking, and proof of funds. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups.
2
Arrive at an Irish port of entry
You'll land at Dublin Airport, Shannon Airport, Cork Airport, or a ferry port like Dublin Port or Rosslare. Follow signs to 'Non-EU Passports' — that's the queue for you.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer will ask: purpose of visit, how long you're staying, where you're staying, and when you're leaving. Answer clearly and honestly. They may ask to see your return ticket or accommodation.
4
Receive your entry stamp
If everything checks out, you'll get a stamp in your passport. That stamp shows your allowed stay — usually 90 days. Check the date before you walk away.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs (green channel for nothing to declare). You're in Ireland.

Frequently asked questions

No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits only. You cannot take up employment. If you want to work, you need a valid work visa or permit before you arrive.
No. The visa-free period is not extendable. You must leave Ireland (or the Common Travel Area) before day 90. Overstaying can result in a ban or future visa refusals.
Overstaying is a breach of immigration rules. You risk being detained, fined, or banned from re-entering Ireland for up to 10 years. Always leave on time.
Northern Ireland is part of the Common Travel Area with Ireland. Your visa-free entry covers both. But note: Northern Ireland is part of the UK, so if you travel there from Ireland, you're still within the same zone. No extra visa needed.
Yes, but you'll clear UK immigration first. Since Brunei passport holders also get visa-free access to the UK (up to 6 months), you can fly into London, then take a flight or ferry to Ireland. Just make sure you have your return ticket from Ireland ready.
If an immigration officer refuses you, ask why. Common reasons: missing return ticket, insufficient funds, or unclear purpose. You can request to speak to a supervisor. If refused, you'll be returned to your departure point. No appeal on the spot.
No. Visa-free visitors do not need to register with the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB). That requirement only applies to non-EEA nationals staying longer than 90 days on a visa.
