Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date from Schengen area
Your Canadian passport needs at least 3 months of validity remaining after your planned exit from Greece (and the entire Schengen zone). Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area within 90 days
Immigration officers at Athens and other Greek ports of entry routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within your 90-day visa-free window. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight, ferry, or bus booking ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking, rental agreement, or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or a letter from your host in Greece. Border officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Have bank statements, a credit card, or cash showing you can support yourself — roughly €50–€100 per day of your stay. Officers rarely ask Canadians for this, but it's a legal requirement under Schengen rules.Recommended
Schengen 90/180-day rule applies
Your 90 days in Greece count toward the total 90 days allowed in all Schengen countries. If you've already spent time in France, Italy, or Spain earlier in the year, check your remaining days before booking.
ETIAS coming soon
Starting in 2026, Canadians will need an ETIAS travel authorisation before flying to Greece or any Schengen country. It's a simple online application costing €7, valid for 3 years. Keep an eye on official EU sources for the exact launch date.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Greek border control
At Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) or any other entry point, join the 'All Passports' or 'Non-EU' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport to the border officer. They'll check your photo, validity, and may ask a few questions like 'How long are you staying?' or 'Where are you staying?' Answer briefly and honestly.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. This stamp starts your 90-day clock. Check the stamp before walking away — if it's smudged or missing, ask them to redo it.
4
Collect your bags and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim, then through customs (usually green channel for nothing to declare). You're now in Greece.

Frequently asked questions

Up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the Schengen area rule — it applies to all 27 Schengen countries combined. So if you spend 30 days in France and 60 in Greece, that's your 90 days used up.
No. The 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended for tourism. If you need to stay longer, you'd have to apply for a national visa (type D) from a Greek consulate before you travel. Overstaying can result in fines and a ban from the Schengen area.
No, not for Canadians staying less than 90 days. Hotels register you automatically. If you're staying in a private home, the host should register you with the local authorities within 3 days, but this is their responsibility, not yours.
You shouldn't let that happen. Your passport must be valid for 6 months beyond your entry date. If it expires during your stay, you could have trouble leaving or re-entering other countries. Renew it before you travel.
Technically, the visa-free stay is for tourism and business meetings, not for remote work for a foreign employer. In practice, many digital nomads do it, but it's a grey area. Greece has a digital nomad visa if you want to be fully legal — that requires a separate application.
You clear immigration at your first Schengen entry point. For example, if you fly Toronto to Frankfurt to Athens, you'll go through German border control in Frankfurt. The 90-day clock starts there, not in Greece.
No. The same visa-free rules apply to all Greek territory, including the islands. Just show your passport at the airport or port — same 90-day limit.
