Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Swiss passport holders enter Lithuania visa-free for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen zone. Your passport just needs to be valid for the whole time you're in Lithuania — no 6-month rule applies for Swiss citizens.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Vilnius Airport and land borders routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines check this at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border guards may ask where you're staying — have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a host's address and phone number ready. Not always requested, but saves time if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Lithuania can ask for proof of sufficient funds — around €40–€50 per day of stay. A bank statement or credit card with available limit works. Rarely checked for Swiss passport holders, but better to have it.Recommended
Schengen area rules apply
Lithuania is part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day visa-free stay counts across all Schengen countries combined. If you've already spent time in France, Germany, or any other Schengen state, that time counts toward your 90-day limit.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Border officers at Vilnius Airport check passport validity carefully. If your passport has less than 6 months remaining from your entry date, you may be refused entry. Double-check before you fly.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you fly
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date) and ensure you have at least 1 blank page. Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups.
2
Arrive at Vilnius Airport or other border point
At Vilnius Airport (VNO), follow signs to 'Non-EU Passports' or 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport, boarding pass, and any supporting documents ready. The officer will check your passport, may ask about your stay, and stamp you in.
3
Present your documents at passport control
Hand over your passport. If asked, state the purpose of your visit (tourism, business, etc.) and how long you plan to stay. You may be asked to show your return ticket or accommodation booking. Answer clearly and confidently.
4
Receive entry stamp and proceed
Once approved, the officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. That stamp marks the start of your 90-day Schengen stay. Collect your luggage and exit the arrivals area.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen short-stay rule. The clock starts ticking from the day you enter any Schengen country, not just Lithuania.
No, the 90-day visa-free period cannot be extended for tourism or business purposes. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a national visa (type D) before your 90 days expire. Contact the Migration Department of Lithuania for details.
Yes, you need proof that you will leave the Schengen Area before your 90 days are up. A flight to a non-Schengen country, a train ticket, or a bus ticket all count. A screenshot or printout is fine.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. Renew your passport before traveling. Some airlines are stricter than others, so don't risk it.
It is not mandatory for visa-free entry, but it is strongly recommended. If you need medical care, costs can add up quickly. Many travellers use SafetyWing or similar providers.
No, the visa-free regime does not permit any form of work, including remote work for a foreign employer. For digital nomad purposes, you would need a specific visa or permit. Check with the Lithuanian embassy.
Report the loss immediately to the local police and get a police report. Then contact the Swiss Embassy in Vilnius (address: Jogailos g. 4, Vilnius) to apply for an emergency travel document. They can issue a temporary passport within a few days.
