Swiss passport holders need a visa to enter New Zealand in 2026. You must apply for a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before you travel — it's quick and done entirely online.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
NZeTA applicationNZeTA: "New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority — required for visa-exempt visitors. Apply at immigration.govt.nz or via the NZeTA app ($17 NZD). Takes minutes to approve."
Electronic Travel Authority
Apply for an NZeTA before you fly — it's mandatory for Swiss passport holders visiting New Zealand. The application costs $17 NZD via the app or $23 NZD on the website, and includes the $35 NZD International Visitor Levy. Approval usually comes through in minutes, but apply at least 72 hours before departure to be safe.Apply for NZeTARequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your Swiss passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in New Zealand. Airlines and immigration officers check this at check-in and arrival — if it expires before you leave, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers at Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready — they'll deny entry if you can't show one.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel bookings or host invitation
Keep your hotel confirmations or a letter from your host handy — immigration may ask where you're staying. A simple booking printout or email works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers occasionally ask for evidence of sufficient funds — a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least $1,000 NZD per month of stay is usually enough. Have a recent statement on your phone or printed.Recommended
Biosecurity is strict
New Zealand has some of the world's strictest biosecurity laws. Declare any food, plants, animal products, outdoor gear (tents, hiking boots), or soil. Fines for undeclared items start at NZD 400. When in doubt, declare it.
NZeTA is linked to your passport
The NZeTA is digital — no sticker or paper. It's linked to your passport number. If you renew your passport, you must apply for a new NZeTA. The old one won't transfer.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for NZeTA online
Go to the official Immigration New Zealand website or download the NZeTA mobile app. Fill in your passport details, travel plans, and answer a few health and character questions. Pay the fee (around NZD 9–12 for the app, plus a tourism levy of NZD 35). Approval usually comes within 72 hours, often sooner.
2
Check your passport validity
Make sure your Swiss passport has at least 6 months validity left from your planned departure date from New Zealand. If it's close, renew it before applying for the NZeTA.
3
Book your travel and accommodation
Book a return or onward ticket and your first night's accommodation. Keep confirmations saved on your phone — you may be asked to show them at check-in or upon arrival.
4
Arrive at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, or Queenstown airport
At passport control, present your Swiss passport. The officer will scan it and see your NZeTA approval automatically. They may ask about your travel plans, accommodation, and return ticket. Answer clearly. After clearance, collect your bags and proceed through customs (biosecurity is strict — declare food, outdoor gear, or soil).
