Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Swiss passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Tuvalu. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Tuvaluan immigration, but airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration at Funafuti International Airport will ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket before they let you through. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this at the counter.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Tuvalu is tiny — most visitors stay at one of the few guesthouses on Funafuti. Have a booking confirmation or a letter of invitation from a host ready. Officers rarely ask, but it helps if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
You won't need to show a bank statement unless you look like you're working or overstaying. Carry enough cash (AUD or USD) for your trip — there are no ATMs on the outer islands and only one on Funafuti.Recommended
Flights are limited
Only Fiji Airways flies to Funafuti, with a few flights per week from Suva. Book well in advance and confirm your return flight before you go.
Medical evacuation is expensive
Tuvalu has no decompression chamber or advanced surgery. If you get seriously ill, you'll be flown to Fiji or New Zealand. Travel insurance with evacuation cover is essential.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Funafuti International Airport
You'll land at the only international airport in Tuvalu. The terminal is small — you'll walk from the plane to the immigration hall.
2
Queue at immigration counter
Present your passport and return ticket. The officer will stamp you in for up to 90 days. The process takes 5–10 minutes.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel (if any) and walk out. No customs declaration form is required for most visitors.
