Schengen area 90/180-day rule
Your 90-day visa-free stay applies to the entire Schengen area, not just Switzerland. Days spent in France, Italy, Germany, etc., all count toward the same 90-day limit. Track your days carefully — overstaying can result in a fine and a re-entry ban.
Switzerland is not in the EU, but it is in Schengen
Switzerland is part of the Schengen area but not the European Union. Your visa-free entry works the same as for EU Schengen countries. The currency is Swiss Franc (CHF), not euros, though euros are accepted in some tourist areas.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Print or save digital copies of your passport, return ticket, accommodation booking, and insurance. Keep them in a separate folder on your phone or in your carry-on.
2
Arrive at the airport in Chile
At check-in, the airline will verify your passport validity (6+ months) and onward ticket. They may also ask for proof of accommodation. If everything's in order, you'll get your boarding pass.
3
Go through Swiss immigration at the airport
At Zurich, Geneva, or Basel airports, join the 'Non-EU/EEA' queue. Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date and allowed stay.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel and walk through customs (green channel if nothing to declare). That's it — you're in Switzerland.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 90-day visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, family visits, or short courses. You cannot take up employment or freelance work. For work, you need a separate work permit, which your employer must arrange before you arrive.
No, extensions are not possible for visa-free stays. You must leave the Schengen area after 90 days. If you need to stay longer, you'd need a national visa (type D) applied for before travel, which is only granted for specific reasons like study or work.
If you're staying in a hotel, they handle registration automatically. If you're staying with friends or family, your host must register you at the local residents' registration office within 14 days of arrival. This is a legal requirement.
Overstaying is a serious violation. You may be fined, banned from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 3 years, and could face deportation. Always track your days carefully — the 90-day clock resets only after you've been outside the Schengen area for 90 consecutive days.
If you have a connecting flight within the Schengen area (e.g., Zurich to Paris), you'll go through immigration at your first Schengen entry point, so the same visa-free rules apply. If you're transiting through a non-Schengen airport (e.g., London Heathrow), no visa is needed.
Report it immediately to the local police and get a police report. Then contact the Chilean embassy in Bern (or the nearest consulate) to apply for an emergency travel document. Keep a photocopy or digital scan of your passport separately to speed up the process.
No. Swiss immigration strictly enforces the 6-month validity rule. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied entry. Renew your passport before traveling.
