What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (or other entry point)
After landing, follow signs to 'Passport Control' (non-EU queue). Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation proof ready. The officer will check your passport, ask about your trip purpose and duration, and stamp your passport. The process usually takes 2-5 minutes.
2
Present documents at border control
Hand over your passport. If asked, state your purpose (tourism, business, etc.) and show your return ticket and accommodation if requested. Answer honestly and briefly. You'll receive an entry stamp valid for up to 90 days.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs (green channel for most tourists). No additional forms needed unless you're carrying large amounts of cash (€10,000+) or restricted goods.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay cannot be extended for tourism or business. You must leave the Schengen area after 90 days. For longer stays, you need a residence permit (e.g., for work or study), which you must apply for before your 90 days expire.
No registration is required for stays under 90 days. If you stay longer than 90 days (with a residence permit), you must register at the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV) within 3 months.
Overstaying can result in a fine, a ban from re-entering the Schengen area, or deportation. The Finnish Border Guard tracks entries and exits. If you realize you'll overstay, contact the local police or immigration office before your visa-free period ends.
No, the visa-free stay does not permit any work, including remote work for a foreign employer. For remote work, you need a digital nomad visa or a residence permit. Short business meetings are allowed, but not regular work.
No, Finland is part of the Schengen area. Your 90-day limit applies to the entire Schengen zone (29 countries). You can travel freely between them, but the total stay across all Schengen countries cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day period.
Carry your passport (or a copy) and your return ticket. Police can ask for ID, but they rarely do for tourists. A driver's license is not accepted as ID for immigration purposes.
It's risky. Immigration may deny entry if you don't have a return or onward ticket. Always have a booked ticket out of the Schengen area before you travel.
