Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Kiribati. Airlines at departure check this before boarding. No minimum validity beyond your stay is required by Kiribati immigration.
Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Kiribati
Immigration officers at Bonriki International Airport ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket before they stamp you in. Have a printed copy or show it on your phone. Without one, they may deny entry.
Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a hotel reservation or a letter from your host ready. Immigration rarely asks for it, but if you arrive without a clear place to stay, they can question your purpose of visit.
Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. Kiribati is expensive — flights and supplies cost more than in most Pacific islands. Officers may ask to see funds if you look underprepared.
Recommended
Strict 6-month passport validity
Kiribati enforces the 6-month passport validity rule at entry. If your passport expires sooner, you will be refused entry. Check your passport's expiry date before booking anything.
No visa extensions available
The 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. Plan your trip so you leave before day 90. If you need more time, you must apply for a different visa category before you arrive.
What happens at the border
1
Arrive at Bonriki International Airport (TRW)
You'll land at the main international airport on South Tarawa. After deplaning, follow signs to the immigration hall. There's usually one queue for all foreign visitors.
2
Present your documents at the immigration counter
Hand over your passport and completed arrival card (you'll get it on the plane). The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation details. Answer clearly. The process is usually quick — 5 to 10 minutes.
3
Get your passport stamped
The officer will stamp your passport with a visitor permit valid for up to 90 days. Check the stamp before leaving the counter to make sure the dates are correct.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, head to the baggage claim area. There's a customs checkpoint on the way out — declare any restricted items if asked.
Enter your arrival date and we'll tell you exactly when you need to leave.

No. The visa-free entry is not extendable. You must leave before the 90 days are up. If you need to stay longer, you'd have to apply for a different visa type before traveling — contact the Kiribati Immigration Office in Tarawa for details.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before traveling.
If you're transiting and not leaving the airport, you generally don't need a visa. But since Bonriki International Airport is small, most transits are actually arrivals. Check with your airline to be sure.
The Australian dollar (AUD). Credit cards are accepted in some hotels and larger shops in Tarawa, but cash is king everywhere else. Bring enough AUD for your stay — ATMs are scarce and unreliable.
No mandatory vaccinations for Colombian travelers. But it's wise to be up-to-date on routine vaccines. Mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue are present, so bring insect repellent.
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism only. You cannot work or study. For those purposes, you need to apply for the appropriate visa before traveling.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined, detained, or banned from re-entering Kiribati. Always leave before your permit expires.
