What happens at the border

1
Arrival at San José Airport (SJO) or Liberia (LIR)
After landing, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). Join the line for foreign passports. Have your passport, return ticket (printed or on phone), and hotel booking ready. The officer will stamp your passport with a 180-day entry. The whole process usually takes 15–30 minutes.
2
Baggage claim and customs
After immigration, collect your luggage. You'll pass through customs where you may be asked to press a button for a random check. If it turns red, your bags are inspected. Green means you're free to go.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 180-day visa-free period is not extendable. You must leave the country before it expires. Overstaying can result in fines and a ban from re-entry.
Not if you're arriving directly from Cyprus or any country without yellow fever. But if you've recently visited a country with yellow fever (e.g., Brazil, Colombia), you'll need proof of vaccination.
You'll be denied entry at the border. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. If it expires during your stay, you're still fine as long as it was valid on entry.
Yes, the same visa-free rules apply at land borders. You'll still need a passport valid for 6+ months and a return ticket. Border crossings can be slower than airports — expect 30–60 minutes.
No separate tax. The $29 tourist visa fee is included in your airline ticket for most flights. If you arrive by land, you may need to pay it at the border (cash or card).
Technically, no — the 180-day visa is for tourism only. But many digital nomads do it quietly. For legal remote work, consider the 'Rentista' visa or the new digital nomad visa (up to 1 year).
Report it immediately to the local police (get a police report) and contact the Cypriot embassy in Mexico City (which covers Costa Rica). They can issue an emergency travel document. Expect 3–5 days.
