What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Malta International Airport (MLA)
You'll land at Malta's only airport, about 8 km from Valletta. Follow signs to 'Arrivals' and 'Passport Control'.
2
Join the non-EU passport queue
There are separate lanes for EU/EEA and non-EU passports. As a Cypriot passport holder, you use the EU/EEA lane — it's usually faster.
3
Present your passport and any requested documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Have your return ticket and accommodation confirmation ready if asked.
4
Get your passport stamped
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp is legible before walking away. Keep the stamp — you'll need it to prove you didn't overstay.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim, then customs (green channel for most). You're free to enter Malta.

Frequently asked questions

No. Cyprus passport holders can enter Malta visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism, business, or family visits.
Up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen Area rule. If you want to stay longer, you need to apply for a residence permit or long-stay visa from the Maltese authorities.
Generally no. The 90-day limit is strict for visa-free stays. Extensions are only granted in exceptional circumstances (e.g., medical emergency). You'd need to leave the Schengen Area and re-enter after 90 days outside.
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. If it's close to expiring, renew it before you travel. Border officers can deny entry if your passport doesn't meet this requirement.
Yes, you must have a booked return or onward ticket out of Malta or the Schengen Area. Immigration may ask to see it. A screenshot on your phone is acceptable.
Not strictly required for entry, but strongly recommended. Medical costs in Malta can be high, and insurance covers repatriation if needed. Some Schengen countries do require it, so it's best to have it.
Overstaying can result in a fine, deportation, and a ban from re-entering the Schengen Area for up to 3 years. Always track your days carefully.
