What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Funafuti International Airport
You'll land at the only international airport in Tuvalu. After deplaning, walk to the immigration hall — it's a small building. There's usually one queue for all passengers.
2
Present documents to immigration officer
Hand over your passport and return ticket. The officer may ask your purpose of visit and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a 90-day visitor permit.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel (if any). Then walk through customs — usually a quick bag check. You're in.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is not extendable. You must leave after 90 days. If you need to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa type before your trip — contact the Tuvalu Department of Immigration in Funafuti.
You'll be denied boarding by your airline and refused entry by Tuvalu immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. No exceptions.
If you're just transiting (leaving the airport within 24 hours and not clearing immigration), you don't need a visa. But since Funafuti is a small airport, most transits are actually entries. Check with your airline.
Tuvalu uses the Australian dollar (AUD). Credit cards are rarely accepted outside the main hotel. Bring enough cash for your stay — there are no ATMs on the island.
Yes, there's a departure tax of about AUD 20-30, usually paid in cash at the airport. Check with your airline if it's included in your ticket.
No. The 90-day visa-free entry is for tourism only. For work or study, you need a separate permit arranged before travel.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined, detained, or banned from re-entering Tuvalu. Leave before your permit expires.
