Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Czech passport only needs to be valid for the time you plan to stay in Costa Rica. Airlines sometimes check for 6 months validity, but Costa Rican immigration does not enforce that rule.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Costa Rica
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward flight out of Costa Rica. Have a printed or digital copy of your ticket ready — they check this at the counter before you get your entry stamp.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Costa Rica doesn't publish a fixed minimum, but carrying a credit card and a few hundred USD in cash (or showing a bank statement) satisfies most officers. They rarely ask, but it's good to have.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Costa Rica. Airlines check this at check-in. If your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to board.
No visa, but keep documents handy
You don't need a visa, but immigration may ask for your return ticket and hotel address. Have them saved on your phone or printed.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before travel
Check your passport validity, ensuring it has 6+ months from arrival. Book a return or onward ticket. Save a screenshot of your flight booking and first-night hotel confirmation on your phone.
2
Arrive at immigration counter
At San José (SJO) or Liberia (LIR) airport, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and hotel address. Answer clearly.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the entry date. You'll be allowed up to 180 days. Count from that stamp. Keep the stamp visible, as you'll need it when leaving.
4
Exit procedure
When leaving, go through immigration again. They'll check your passport and stamp you out. No special forms are needed.
