Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for an Azerbaijan eVisa at evisa.gov.az at least 3 working days before departure. The eVisa is a single-entry visa valid for 30 days. Pay the fee online with a credit card — approval arrives by email as a PDF.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your German passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Azerbaijan. No minimum validity beyond departure is required by law, but airlines may check for at least 3 months validity beyond your travel dates.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Baku Heydar Aliyev Airport routinely ask for proof of a return or onward flight. Have your booking confirmation ready — either a printed copy or on your phone.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Have a hotel booking or invitation letter with your name and address ready. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
Carry enough cash or a credit card to cover your stay — roughly $50 USD per day is a safe benchmark. Officers almost never check, but it's a formal requirement in the visa rules.Recommended
eVisa is mandatory — no visa on arrival
German passport holders cannot get a visa at the airport or land border. You must apply and receive approval before you travel. Apply at least a week before your trip to be safe.
Passport validity counts from entry, not departure
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive in Azerbaijan. If it expires sooner, renew it before applying for the eVisa.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to evisa.gov.az, fill in your passport details, travel dates, and upload a passport-style photo. Pay the fee (around $20 USD) with a credit card. You'll get a confirmation email with an application reference number.
2
Wait for approval (3 business days)
Most applications are processed within 3 business days. You'll receive the approved eVisa as a PDF attachment. Print it or save it to your phone — you'll need to show it at the border.
3
Arrive at the airport in Azerbaijan
At Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport, go to the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Hand over your passport and printed eVisa (or show it on your phone). The officer will scan it, stamp your passport, and wave you through. Expect a 5–10 minute wait.
4
Show your return ticket and accommodation if asked
Immigration officers sometimes ask for proof of onward travel and where you're staying. Have your booking confirmations ready on your phone. They rarely ask for proof of funds.
