Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay in Japan
Your passport only needs to be valid for the duration of your stay — Japan does not enforce the 6-month validity rule. Airlines sometimes still check for 6 months, so verify with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Recommended — enforcement varies by officer
Immigration officers at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai may ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket ready. Budget airlines sometimes check at check-in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Recommended — hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, hostel booking, or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended — bank statement or cash
Have a recent bank statement or enough cash/credit to show you can support yourself. No fixed amount is published, but ¥50,000–¥100,000 per week is a safe benchmark.Recommended

Overstaying is not worth it
The 90-day visa-free period is strict and not extendable. Overstaying even a day can lead to detention, fines, and a ban from re-entering Japan. Set a calendar reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration
At Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or any other Japanese airport, follow signs to 'Foreign Passports'. Join the queue for visa-exempt travellers (usually the same line as everyone else).
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport and completed arrival card (you'll get one on the plane or at the counter). If you registered with Visit Japan Web, show the QR code instead of the paper card. The officer may ask for your return ticket or accommodation address — have them ready.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 'Temporary Visitor' status and a 90-day stay period. That's it — you're in. No visa, no fee.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave Japan before day 90. Overstaying can result in fines, detention, or a ban from re-entering. If you need longer, apply for a visa (e.g., a work or student visa) before you travel.
Technically, the visa-free status is for tourism and short business activities (meetings, conferences). Remote work for a foreign employer is a grey area — immigration doesn't actively check, but if asked, say you're on holiday. If you plan to work for a Japanese company, you need a work visa.
If you're transiting through a Japanese airport and staying airside (not passing immigration), you don't need a visa. If you want to leave the airport during a layover, you can use the visa-free entry as long as your total stay is under 90 days.
Overstaying is serious. You'll be detained, fined, and may be deported. A record of overstay can affect future visa applications to Japan and other countries. Set a reminder to leave before day 90.
No, there's no formal requirement to show bank statements or cash. But if the officer suspects you can't support yourself (e.g., you have no return ticket and no accommodation), they may ask. Having a credit card and a few hundred euros in cash is sensible.
Yes, you can come and go as you please, as long as each stay is under 90 days and you don't appear to be living in Japan. If you spend more than 180 days per year in Japan, immigration may question your intentions.
No vaccines are required for entry. Routine vaccines (MMR, tetanus, etc.) are recommended but not checked. COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted — no test or vaccine certificate needed.
