Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get your visa on arrival at Maputo International Airport and other land borders. Pay $50 USD in cash (exact change) for a single-entry tourist visa valid for 30 days. Have a printed copy of your hotel booking and return ticket ready — the officer may ask to see them before issuing the visa.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Passport validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Mozambique. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Without one, you risk being refused entry and sent back on the next flight. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Mozambique. Officers at Maputo airport sometimes ask for this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of funds
Financial means
Carry at least $500 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing sufficient funds. Immigration may ask how you plan to support yourself during your stay.Recommended
Cash only for visa fee
The visa on arrival counter only accepts cash — no credit or debit cards. Bring $50 USD in crisp bills (no tears or marks) or the equivalent in Mozambican meticais. ATMs are available after you clear immigration, so you can't withdraw cash to pay the fee.
Arrival card — keep the stub
You'll fill out an arrival card on the plane or at immigration. The officer will give you a stub after stamping your passport. Keep it with your passport — you'll need to hand it back when you leave Mozambique.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Maputo or Beira airport
After deplaning, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Visa on Arrival'. At Maputo International Airport (MPM), the visa counter is just before the passport control booths. Join the queue for 'Visa on Arrival' — it's separate from the main immigration line.
2
Present documents and pay fee
Hand over your passport, completed arrival card (usually given on the plane), and your return ticket. Pay the visa fee in cash — $50 USD is standard for a single-entry tourist visa. The officer will process your visa and stick it into your passport.
3
Proceed to passport control
Once you have the visa sticker, move to the passport control queue. The officer will stamp you in. Keep your arrival card stub — you'll need it when you leave.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually a quick bag scan. You're free to enter Mozambique.
