Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Visa required
Apply for a Cuban visa at the nearest Cuban embassy or consulate before travel. The visa is a single-entry tourist card (Tarjeta del Turista) valid for 30 days. Start the process at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website or contact the embassy directly.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your Ethiopian passport must be valid for at least the entire period you plan to stay in Cuba. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Havana Airport always ask for proof of a return or onward flight out of Cuba. Have a printed or digital copy of your ticket ready — they will check it before stamping your passport.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Carry a hotel booking confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host in Cuba. While not always checked, having it ready avoids delays if the officer asks where you are staying.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
Bring evidence of sufficient funds for your stay — a bank statement or credit card showing at least $50 USD per day is a safe benchmark. Officers rarely ask, but it helps if questioned.Recommended
Visa required — no exceptions
Ethiopian passport holders cannot enter Cuba without a visa obtained in advance. There is no visa on arrival, no e-visa, and no waiver. Plan ahead.
Keep your tourist card stub
When you enter Cuba, immigration gives you a tourist card stub. You must return it when you leave. Lose it and you'll pay a fine at the airport immigration office.
Travel insurance is cheap insurance
Cuba's hospitals are basic and charge cash upfront for foreigners. A $30 travel insurance policy can save you thousands. Get one before you go.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a Cuban visa in Addis Ababa
Visit the Cuban Embassy in Addis Ababa (Bole area, near the old airport road). Submit your passport, a completed application form, passport photos, flight itinerary, and proof of accommodation. Processing takes 5–10 working days. The visa is a tourist card sticker placed in your passport.
2
Pack your documents
Before you leave for the airport, put your passport (with visa), return ticket printout, hotel booking, and travel insurance certificate in your carry-on. Keep a digital copy on your phone too.
3
Arrival at José Martí International Airport, Havana
After landing, follow signs to immigration. Join the queue for foreign passports. Hand over your passport with visa, return ticket, and accommodation proof. The officer may ask a few questions (purpose of visit, length of stay). Answer clearly. You'll get a stamp and a tourist card stub — keep that stub safe, you need it to leave.
4
Exit Cuba
At departure, you'll need to show your passport and the tourist card stub. If you lost the stub, you'll have to pay a fine (around 25–50 CUP) at the airport immigration office before you can board.
