No visa on arrival — plan ahead
Ethiopian passport holders cannot get a visa at any German airport or land border. You must apply at the German embassy in Addis Ababa before you travel. Start the process at least 6 weeks before your departure.
Schengen visa covers 27 countries
A German-issued Schengen visa lets you travel to all 27 Schengen countries (France, Italy, Spain, etc.) for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. You don't need separate visas for each country.

Go to the embassy's appointment system online. Slots fill up fast — book at least 3 weeks before your planned travel. You'll need to appear in person.

Prepare your documents
Gather your passport, completed application form, photos, flight and hotel bookings, insurance, bank statements, and any other supporting papers. Make photocopies of everything.

Attend the visa interview
Show up at the embassy on time with all originals and copies. The officer will ask about your trip, your job, and your ties to Ethiopia. Answer honestly and briefly.

Pay the visa fee
The Schengen visa fee is €80 for adults (about 4,800 ETB at current rates). Pay in cash or by bank transfer as instructed. Keep the receipt.

Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days, but can stretch to 30–45 days during peak season. Don't book non-refundable flights until you have the visa.
