Apply for a visa at the Japanese embassy or consulate
Submit your visa application at the Embassy of Japan in Addis Ababa or the nearest consulate. You'll need the completed application form, passport, photo, flight itinerary, hotel booking, bank statements, and any other documents they request. Processing takes 5–10 business days, sometimes longer. Apply at least 4 weeks before your trip.

Wait for visa approval
The embassy will review your application. You may be called for an interview. Once approved, you'll receive a visa sticker in your passport. Check the validity dates — you must enter Japan before the visa expires.

Arrive at a Japanese airport
You'll land at Narita (Tokyo), Haneda (Tokyo), Kansai (Osaka), or another international airport. Follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' immigration. Have your passport with visa, boarding pass, and return ticket ready. The officer may ask about your trip purpose and accommodation.
