Finnish passport holders need a visa to visit Canada in 2026. You must apply for a visitor visa (TRV) before you travel — there is no visa waiver or eTA option for Finnish citizens. Plan ahead, as processing can take several weeks.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Apply for a visitor visa
Finland passport holders need a visitor visa to enter Canada. Submit your application online through the IRCC portal at least 4 weeks before travel. Processing times vary by visa office — check the IRCC website for current estimates.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Canada. No minimum validity beyond departure is required by Canadian law, but airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers will ask for proof of onward travel — a return flight to Finland or a ticket to another country. Have a printed or digital copy ready. Airlines also check this before boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
Have a hotel booking, hostel reservation, or a letter from your host with their address and contact details. Immigration rarely asks, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Carry bank statements or a credit card showing you can cover your stay. No fixed amount is required, but officers may ask if you look underfunded. $2,000 CAD per month is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Apply well in advance
Visa processing can take 2–6 weeks, and during peak season (summer) it can be longer. Don't book non-refundable flights or hotels until your visa is approved.
Multiple-entry visa is worth it
For CAD 500, a multiple-entry visa lets you come and go for up to 10 years (or until your passport expires). If you plan to visit Canada more than once, it's cheaper than applying for a single-entry visa each time.

What happens at the border

1
Submit visa application online
Go to the official Canada visa website (IRCC) and create an account. Fill out the application form, upload your documents (passport scan, photo, travel itinerary, proof of funds, etc.), and pay the fee (CAD 100 for a single-entry visa, CAD 500 for a multiple-entry visa). Processing takes 2–6 weeks on average.
2
Attend biometrics appointment
After submitting, you'll get a letter asking for biometrics (fingerprints and photo). Book an appointment at the nearest Visa Application Centre (VAC) — in Finland, that's in Helsinki. Walk in with your passport and the letter. The appointment takes about 15 minutes.
3
Wait for visa decision
Once biometrics are done, your application is processed. You'll receive an email when a decision is made. If approved, the visa sticker is placed in your passport (you may need to mail it in or drop it off at the VAC).
4
Arrive at Canadian border
At the airport, go to the 'Visitors' queue. Hand over your passport with the visa sticker. The border officer may ask about your trip purpose, funds, and return plans. Answer honestly. They'll stamp your passport with the allowed stay (usually up to 6 months).
