Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Finnish passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in the Dominican Republic. No minimum validity period beyond your stay is required, but airlines may check for at least 6 months validity at check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Dominican Republic
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at passport control. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight booking ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers occasionally ask for this, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing you can cover your expenses. There is no fixed minimum amount, but showing at least $100 USD per day of stay is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check your passport validity at check-in. If you have less than 6 months remaining from your entry date, you will be denied boarding. No exceptions.
Tourist card is included in most flights
When you book your flight, check if the tourist card fee is included. Many airlines (including Finnair and TUI) include it in the ticket price. If not, you'll pay at the airport — have $10 USD or equivalent in DOP ready.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave Finland, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of both on your phone. Consider getting travel insurance and an eSIM.
2
Check-in and boarding
At Helsinki or any other departure airport, the airline will verify your passport validity and onward ticket. They may also ask for accommodation proof. If everything is in order, you'll get your boarding pass.
3
Arrival at Dominican Republic airport
At Punta Cana (PUJ), Santo Domingo (SDQ), or Puerto Plata (POP), follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). You'll be given a tourist card (tarjeta de turista) — usually included in your airfare. Fill it out if not pre-filled. Queue up, present your passport and the card. The officer may ask your purpose of stay and return date. Answer clearly.
4
Customs and baggage claim
After immigration, collect your luggage and proceed to customs. There's a green channel for nothing to declare and a red channel for goods over the duty-free limit. Keep your tourist card stub — you'll need it when departing.
5
Exit the airport
Once through customs, you're free to exit. If you arranged a transfer or taxi, head to the designated area. Have your accommodation address ready for the driver.

You'll likely be denied boarding by the airline. Dominican immigration requires at least 6 months of validity from your entry date. Renew your passport before you travel.

Overstays are fined at the airport when you leave. The fine is about 1,000 DOP (€15) per month overstayed, up to a maximum. It's better to apply for an extension before your 30 days are up.
