Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Gambia. There's no 6-month validity rule for Finnish passport holders, but airlines may still check for at least 3 months beyond your departure date.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Gambia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at Banjul Airport. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have your first night's hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry at least $200 USD or equivalent in cash or a credit card statement. Immigration may ask how you'll fund your trip, especially for longer stays near the 90-day limit.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Gambia. If it's expiring sooner, renew it before you travel. There are no exceptions.
Proof of onward travel is routinely checked
Immigration officers at Banjul Airport almost always ask to see your return or onward ticket. Have a screenshot or printed copy ready. If you don't have one, you may be denied boarding or entry.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Banjul International Airport (BJL)
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration'. There's usually one queue for all foreign nationals. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will check your passport validity and ask for your return ticket. They may also ask where you're staying. The process takes about 5–10 minutes if you have everything ready.
2
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a visa-free entry valid for up to 90 days. Check the stamp before walking away — make sure the date is correct. If you're staying longer than 30 days, ask if you need to register with immigration later.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim. Then proceed through customs. There's a green channel for nothing to declare and a red channel for goods over the duty-free limit. Keep your passport and boarding pass handy until you're outside the arrivals hall.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to leave and re-enter, or apply for a longer-term visa before travel. Overstaying can result in fines or deportation.
You will be denied entry. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before traveling.
Gambia requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever. If you're flying directly from Finland, you don't need it. But if you've been in any African or South American country recently, you'll need to show the certificate. Check the latest requirements before you go.
Yes, you can cross the border by road from Senegal. The same visa-free rules apply — 90 days. At land borders, the process is similar: passport check, stamp, and proof of onward travel. Keep your passport and return ticket handy.
The local currency is the Gambian dalasi (GMD). Euros and US dollars are widely accepted at hotels and larger shops, but you'll get better rates if you exchange at a bank or official exchange. ATMs are available in Banjul and Serrekunda, but not everywhere. Bring some cash in euros or dollars as backup.
Gambia is generally safe for tourists, but petty crime like pickpocketing and bag snatching can happen in busy areas. Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar places. Keep valuables in your hotel safe. The political situation is stable, but check your government's travel advisory before you go.
For stays under 30 days, no. If you plan to stay longer than 30 days, you should register with the Gambia Immigration Department in Banjul within 7 days of arrival. They'll issue a registration card. It's free but takes about an hour. Bring your passport and a passport photo.
