Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Finnish passport needs to be valid only for the length of your stay in Ireland. No 6-month validity rule applies for EU nationals. Airlines rarely check beyond basic validity.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Ireland
Immigration officers at Dublin and Shannon airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. A return flight, ferry booking, or bus ticket out of Ireland works. Without one, you risk being questioned and possibly refused entry.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, hostel booking, or a letter from your host ready. Officers rarely ask for it for EU citizens, but if you're staying with friends, a simple invitation letter with their address helps.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least €100–150 per day. Officers rarely check for EU nationals, but if you look like you're working or overstaying, they'll ask.Recommended
Ireland is not in Schengen
Even though Finland is in the EU and Schengen, Ireland is not part of the Schengen Area. You will go through passport control and get a stamp. Your Schengen visa or residence permit does not grant entry to Ireland.
No arrival declaration needed
You do not need to fill out any arrival form or pre-register online before traveling. Just show up with your passport and documents.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave Finland, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), print or save your return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Have them easily accessible on your phone or in a folder.
2
Arrive at Dublin or Shannon Airport
When you land, follow signs to 'Non-EU Passports' (even though Finland is in the EU, Ireland is not in Schengen, so you use the non-EU queue). Queue times vary — Dublin can be 20–45 minutes during peak hours.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, how long you're staying, where you're staying, and when you're leaving. Answer clearly and honestly. They rarely ask for documents unless something seems off.
4
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. You're usually allowed up to 90 days. Check the stamp — if it says a shorter period, note the date.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. Green channel for no goods to declare, red channel if you have something to declare.
