Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date from Kazakhstan. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Kazakhstan
Immigration officers at Almaty and Nur-Sultan airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or an invitation letter from your host. Border officers occasionally ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have access to at least 50,000 KZT (around $110 USD) per day of your stay. A bank statement or credit card is fine — officers rarely ask, but it's better to have it ready.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Kazakhstan. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to fly — no exceptions.
No visa, no registration — just show up
Finnish passport holders get 30 days visa-free with no registration requirement. No forms to fill, no fees to pay. Just your passport, a return ticket, and a place to stay for the first night.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night's accommodation. Save screenshots of both on your phone. Consider getting travel insurance and a local eSIM.
2
Arrive at a Kazakh airport or land border
Major entry points include Almaty International Airport (ALA), Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport (NQZ), and land borders from Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and China. Join the 'Foreign Passports' queue.
3
Present your passport and boarding pass
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation details. Answer clearly — they speak basic English at major airports, but having a hotel address written down helps.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the entry date and the allowed stay (30 days). Check the stamp before leaving the counter. If the date is wrong, ask for a correction immediately.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, pick up your bags from the carousel and proceed through customs. There's nothing else to fill in — no arrival declaration form required for Finnish citizens.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave Kazakhstan before the 30 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines and a ban from re-entry. If you need to stay longer, you'll need to apply for a visa at a Kazakh embassy before your trip.
You will be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before traveling.
No, for stays under 30 days, Finnish citizens do not need to register. If you somehow stay longer (which requires a visa), registration becomes mandatory.
Yes, you can enter via any official land border crossing. The same visa-free rules apply. Just make sure you have your passport and return ticket ready. Some land crossings may have limited hours, so check ahead.
No, it's not mandatory for visa-free entry. But it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Kazakhstan can be high for uninsured travellers, and evacuation to Europe is extremely expensive.
The local currency is the Kazakhstani tenge (KZT). ATMs are widely available in cities. Credit cards are accepted at hotels, restaurants, and shops in Almaty and Nur-Sultan. Bring some cash for taxis, markets, and rural areas.
No mandatory vaccinations for Finnish citizens. Routine vaccines (MMR, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, polio) should be up to date. Hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended if you're eating street food or staying in rural areas.
