Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Finnish passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Laos. Airlines check this before boarding, and immigration at Vientiane and Luang Prabang enforce it strictly.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Laos
Immigration officers at Wattay International Airport and land borders routinely ask for a printed or digital onward ticket within 15 days. Budget airlines flying into Laos are known to deny boarding without one.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed or digital hotel confirmation for at least the first few nights. Immigration rarely asks, but if you arrive without a clear address, they may pull you aside for extra questioning.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry at least $1,000 USD in cash or have a bank statement ready. Laos is cash-heavy, and immigration officers occasionally ask to see funds, especially if you look like you're planning to work.Recommended
15-day limit is strict
The 15-day visa-free period starts the day you arrive. It cannot be extended. If you overstay, you'll be fined $10 per day. Plan your exit accordingly.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Laos, not from your departure date. Double-check before you fly.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration counter
At Wattay International Airport (Vientiane) or Luang Prabang International Airport, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. For visa-free entry, go directly to the 'Foreign Passports' counter.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport (with 6+ months validity and a blank page), your return/onward ticket (printed or on phone), and your accommodation booking. The officer will stamp you in.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 15-day visa-free entry. Check the stamp says '15 days' before leaving the counter. No fee is charged for visa-free entry.
4
Collect baggage and exit
After immigration, collect your luggage from the carousel, then proceed through customs (usually green channel for nothing to declare). You're free to enter Laos.

Frequently asked questions

No, the 15-day visa-free entry is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Laos and re-enter (visa run) or apply for a visa before arrival (e.g., a 30-day tourist visa from a Lao embassy). Overstaying costs $10 per day.
You need a visa. Apply for a 30-day tourist visa at a Lao embassy or consulate before travel (cost around $40). Alternatively, get a 30-day visa on arrival at the airport (cost $30-$40, requires 2 passport photos and a completed form). Visa-free entry is only for 15 days.
If you stay airside and don't pass immigration, no visa is needed. But if you leave the transit area (e.g., to catch a domestic flight or enter the country), you need either visa-free entry (if eligible) or a visa. Check with your airline.
You'll be fined $10 per day of overstay, payable at immigration when you leave. Overstays can also result in a black mark on your record, so avoid it. Extensions are not possible, so plan your exit carefully.
Yes, the 15-day visa-free entry applies at all international border crossings (e.g., Friendship Bridge from Thailand, or from Cambodia, Vietnam, China). The same rules apply: passport validity, onward ticket, and blank page.
No, there is no official requirement to show proof of funds for visa-free entry. However, immigration may ask about your travel plans. Having a return ticket and accommodation booking is usually sufficient.
No, there is no separate arrival declaration form for Laos. You just fill out the standard immigration card (given on the plane or at the border) and present it with your passport. Keep the departure card stub safe — you'll need it when leaving.
