Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire period you plan to stay in Tajikistan. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Tajik law, but airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Tajikistan
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket at Dushanbe International Airport. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight itinerary ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may request your hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Keep a printed copy or have it accessible on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
You may be asked to demonstrate you have enough money for your trip. Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least $50 USD per day of your stay.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. If it's close to expiring, renew before you go. No exceptions at the border.
No visa, but be prepared
Even though you don't need a visa, immigration may still ask for your return ticket and proof of accommodation. Have them ready on your phone to avoid delays.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Dushanbe International Airport
Most flights land at Dushanbe (DYU). Follow signs to 'Passport Control'. There are usually two queues: one for Tajik citizens, one for foreigners. Join the foreigners queue.
2
Present your passport and ticket
Hand over your passport and return/onward ticket. The officer will check your passport validity and stamp you in. No visa is needed, so no extra paperwork.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim. Then walk through customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're free to enter Tajikistan.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a visa at a Tajik embassy before travel, or leave and re-enter.
You'll be denied entry. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month validity is strictly enforced at Dushanbe airport.
For stays under 30 days, no registration is required. If you stay longer (with a visa), you must register within 10 days at the OVIR office in Dushanbe.
Yes, the visa-free policy applies at all land borders. Common crossings include Oybek (from Uzbekistan) and Kyzyl-Art (from Kyrgyzstan). Expect longer queues and more thorough checks than at the airport.
The local currency is the Tajikistani somoni (TJS). ATMs are available in Dushanbe but less reliable outside the capital. Bring US dollars or euros in cash — they're easy to exchange at banks and exchange offices.
It's not mandatory for entry, but it's a smart idea. A basic hospital visit can cost $100–300 per day, and emergency evacuation can run into thousands. A policy like SafetyWing covers both.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined approximately 200–400 TJS (about $20–40) per day of overstay, and you may be banned from re-entering for up to a year. Don't risk it.
