British passport holders can visit Austria for tourism or business for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. This hasn't changed since the UK left the EU. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Austria.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Austria. Schengen rules don't require 6 months beyond departure, but airlines sometimes enforce it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration at Vienna and other Schengen entry points routinely asks for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready. This applies to the entire 90-day Schengen zone, not just Austria.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers occasionally ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from a friend you're visiting. A printed copy or phone screenshot works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Austria doesn't publish a fixed amount, but having at least €100 per day of stay in cash or a recent bank statement keeps things smooth. I've never been asked, but a few travellers report it.Recommended
Schengen area rules
Your 90-day visa-free stay applies to the entire Schengen area (27 European countries). Days spent in France, Germany, Italy, etc., all count toward the same 90-day limit. Use the Schengen calculator to track your days.
Passport validity is critical
Airlines check this before you board. If your passport expires within 6 months of your entry date, you will be denied boarding. Renew early.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at passport control
At Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, or any Austrian airport, join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport ready. The officer will check your passport, may ask about your trip purpose and length of stay, and will stamp you in. This usually takes 1-2 minutes.
2
Present your documents if asked
If the officer asks for proof of return ticket or accommodation, show the screenshot or printout. Be polite and direct. They rarely ask for more than that.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After the stamp, head to baggage claim (if you checked bags) then customs. Green channel for nothing to declare, red channel for goods over the duty-free limit. Then you're free to go.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 90-day limit applies to the entire Schengen area. You cannot extend a tourist stay in Austria. For longer stays (work, study, family reunion), you need a national visa or residence permit, which you must apply for before you travel.
No. British passport holders do not need a transit visa for Austrian airports, even if you change planes. Just stay airside and have your onward boarding pass ready.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. Renew your passport before you travel. The 6-month rule is strictly enforced.
Yes. There are no border checks between Schengen countries. You can drive or take a train from Germany, Italy, Switzerland, or any other Schengen state without showing your passport. But keep it with you — police may do random checks.
If you're staying in a hotel, they register you automatically. If you're staying in a private home (e.g., with friends or Airbnb), you must register at the local Meldeamt (registration office) within 3 days of arrival. Hotels handle this for you.
Overstaying is a serious offence. You can be fined, banned from re-entering the Schengen area, or both. The fine varies but can be several hundred euros. Always leave before your 90 days are up.
No, it's not mandatory for entry. But if you need medical treatment, you'll pay out of pocket unless you have insurance. A basic policy covering medical emergencies is cheap and highly recommended.
