British passport holders can visit Belgium for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa for tourism, business, or family visits. These rules have applied since the UK left the EU and remain unchanged for 2026.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area
Your passport needs at least 3 months of validity after your last day in Belgium. The 90-day visa-free limit applies across all 27 Schengen countries combined — you cannot reset the clock by hopping to Paris or Amsterdam.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Brussels Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a signed letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Carry a recent bank statement or enough cash/cards to cover your stay — roughly €45–€65 per day. Officers almost never check this for UK passport holders, but the regulation exists.Recommended
90-day clock resets only after 180 days
The 90-day limit is per 180-day period. Leaving and re-entering the next day does not reset the clock. Use the Schengen short-stay calculator to track your days.
Entry stamp is your proof of legal stay
Always check your passport after the officer stamps it. If there's no stamp, you may have trouble proving you entered legally. Ask for one if it's missing.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before travel
Gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups.
2
Arrive at the border (airport, port, or Eurostar)
At Brussels Airport, Zaventem, or any other entry point, join the 'Non-EU' queue. Have your passport and supporting documents ready. The officer will check your passport, ask about your trip purpose and duration, and stamp you in.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry. This stamp starts your 90-day clock. Check the stamp before walking away — if it's missing or wrong, ask for correction immediately.
4
Enjoy your stay up to 90 days
You can travel freely within the Schengen area (26 countries) during your 90 days. Keep your passport and return ticket handy for spot checks.
5
Exit before day 90
Leave Belgium or the Schengen area before your 90 days expire. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, or a ban from re-entering. Your exit stamp will be applied when you leave.

Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined, deported, and banned from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 5 years. Always leave before day 90.

Yes. The 90-day limit applies to the entire Schengen area. If you fly into Amsterdam or Paris first, that counts toward your 90 days. Your entry stamp will be from the first Schengen country you enter.
You will be refused entry. Renew your passport before travel. Even a small tear or water damage can cause problems — get a new one if there's any doubt.
No. If you're transiting through a Belgian airport and staying airside (not passing through immigration), you don't need a visa. But if you leave the transit area, you need the same visa-free conditions as for a visit.
