Schengen visa covers all 27 countries
A Swiss-issued Schengen visa lets you travel to all 27 Schengen countries (France, Germany, Italy, etc.) for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Just make sure Switzerland is your main destination or first point of entry.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Gather all required documents: passport, photos, bank statements, flight and hotel bookings, insurance, and the completed visa application form. Make photocopies of everything.
2
Submit your application in Accra
Go to the Swiss Embassy in Accra or the VFS Global visa application center. You'll submit your form, pay the fee (around €80 for adults, €40 for children), and provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo).

Standard processing takes 15 calendar days, but can take up to 45 days during peak seasons. Do not book non-refundable flights until you have the visa.
4
Collect your passport
Once processed, you'll be notified to pick up your passport. Check the visa sticker for correct dates and spelling before leaving the center.
5
Arrive in Switzerland
At the airport, go to the 'All Passports' queue. The officer will check your passport, visa, and may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. Answer clearly and honestly.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing is 15 calendar days, but it can take up to 45 days if your application needs extra checks. Apply at least 3-4 weeks before your trip. The Swiss Embassy in Accra handles applications through VFS Global.
The Schengen visa fee is €80 for adults (about CHF 80) and €40 for children aged 6-12. Children under 6 are free. There may be an additional service fee if you apply through VFS Global.
Yes, if you have a valid Schengen visa from any Schengen country, you can enter Switzerland as long as your visa is still valid and covers the dates of your stay. But you must apply for the visa at the embassy of the country where you will spend the most time.
Immigration officers can ask for proof of funds. The guideline is around CHF 100 per day of your stay. Bank statements, credit cards, or cash are acceptable. It's rare for tourists to be asked, but have evidence ready.
You will receive a letter explaining the reason. Common reasons include insufficient funds, weak ties to Ghana, or incomplete documents. You can appeal within 30 days or reapply with stronger evidence. There is no automatic refund of the visa fee.
Extensions are not granted for tourist stays. You must leave before your visa expires. If you need to stay longer for exceptional reasons (e.g., medical emergency), you must apply at the cantonal migration office before your visa expires.
If you are transiting through a Swiss airport and do not leave the international transit area, you do not need a visa. But if you need to go through passport control (e.g., to switch terminals or stay overnight), you need a Schengen visa.
