Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Schengen visa application
Apply before travel
You need a Schengen visa to enter Spain. Apply at the Spanish consulate in your home country — processing takes at least 15 calendar days. Submit your application no more than 6 months before your trip.Apply for Schengen visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your Ghanaian passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Spain. Schengen rules require the passport to be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen area.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of exit from Schengen
Immigration officers at Spanish airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen area before your visa expires. Have a printed or digital copy ready — airlines also check this before boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a hotel reservation, hostel booking, or a signed invitation letter from your host in Spain. Immigration may ask for this at the border — a printed confirmation works best.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry bank statements, cash, or a credit card showing you have at least €100 per day of your stay. Officers at Madrid and Barcelona airports occasionally ask for this.Recommended
Visa required — apply well in advance
Ghanaian passport holders cannot enter Spain without a visa. Start the application process at least 4 weeks before your trip. The Spanish embassy in Accra handles all visa applications.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Spain, not from your departure date. If your passport expires sooner, renew it first.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a Schengen visa at the Spanish embassy in Accra
Book an appointment at the Spanish Embassy in Accra (or the visa application centre they use). Submit your application, passport, photos, flight itinerary, hotel booking, travel insurance, and proof of funds. Pay the visa fee (around €80 for adults). Processing takes about 15 calendar days.
2
Wait for visa decision
The embassy will process your application. You may be called for an interview. Once approved, your passport will be returned with the visa sticker. Check the validity dates and number of entries.
3
Travel to Spain
At the airport in Spain, join the 'All Passports' queue. Hand over your passport with the visa. The officer may ask for your return ticket and hotel booking. Answer honestly. They'll stamp your passport and you're in.
4
During your stay
Keep your passport and a copy of your visa with you. If you overstay, you risk a ban. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for an extension before your visa expires — but extensions are rarely granted for tourist visas.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing is 15 calendar days from the date you submit your application. It can take longer if the embassy needs additional documents or if it's peak season. Apply at least 3-4 weeks before your trip.
Extensions for tourist visas are rarely granted. You must apply before your visa expires, but approval is not guaranteed. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban from the Schengen area.
Immigration officers can ask. The rule of thumb is around €100 per day of your stay. Bank statements, a letter from your employer, or a sponsor letter can work. Have it ready but don't expect to be asked every time.
You must renew your passport before applying for the visa. The 6-month rule is strict — count from your entry date into Spain. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied the visa.
Yes, if you have a valid Schengen visa issued by another country, you can enter Spain as long as Spain is your main destination or you enter through Spain. But the visa must be valid for the entire period you're in Spain.
Overstaying is a serious violation. You could be fined, banned from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 5 years, or even detained. Always leave before your visa expires.
No. There is no visa on arrival for Ghanaian passport holders. You must get a visa before you travel.
