Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Hong Kong passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Vietnam. Airlines and immigration officers enforce this strictly — no exceptions.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight itinerary ready. Budget airlines may refuse boarding without one.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or an invitation letter from your host in Vietnam. Immigration rarely asks, but having it ready avoids delays if questioned.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show sufficient cash or bank statement
Have at least $500 USD in cash or a bank statement showing available funds. Officers may ask to see proof of financial means, especially if you lack a return ticket.Recommended
Visa-free entry is automatic
You do not need to register or apply for anything before travel. Just show up with your valid passport and onward ticket. The 45-day allowance is granted on arrival.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Vietnam, not from your departure date. If it expires sooner, renew before you travel.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at any international airport or land border
You can enter Vietnam visa-free for up to 45 days through any international airport (e.g., Noi Bai in Hanoi, Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang) or land border crossing from Cambodia, Laos, or China. No pre-approval needed.
2
Queue at immigration and present your passport
Join the 'Foreigners' queue. Hand over your passport. The officer will check your passport validity, may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. Answer clearly. You'll get a stamp with your entry date and allowed stay.
3
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. Keep your boarding pass handy in case asked.
