Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Hungarian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in China. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from China
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at passport control. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone — showing a flight out of China within 30 days of arrival.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in China. Officers rarely ask for it, but if they do, not having it can delay your entry.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card ready showing access to at least 3,000 CNY (or equivalent in EUR/USD). Officers almost never check this for short stays, but it is a formal requirement.Recommended
Overstaying is expensive
Even one extra day can cost you 500 CNY (about 65 EUR) in fines. Overstays of more than 10 days can lead to detention and a multi-year ban from China. Set a reminder to leave a day early.
Internet access is restricted
Many Western websites (Google, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram) are blocked in China. Install a reliable VPN on your phone and laptop before you leave. Also, get a local SIM or eSIM — foreign SIMs often have poor connectivity on Chinese networks.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months beyond entry), book a return/onward ticket, and save a screenshot of your booking. Also save your first night's accommodation confirmation. If you want internet access, install an eSIM app like Airalo and buy a China plan before you fly.
2
Arrive at a Chinese airport or land border
At major airports like Beijing Capital (PEK), Shanghai Pudong (PVG), or Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN), follow signs to 'Foreigners' or 'All Passports'. Have your passport and return ticket screenshot ready. The immigration officer will stamp you in — no visa needed.
3
Complete arrival procedures
You may be asked to fill out a paper arrival card (still common at some land borders) or use an electronic kiosk. Keep the departure slip they give you — you'll need it when you leave. If you have an eSIM, it activates automatically on landing.
4
Enjoy your stay up to 30 days
You can stay for a maximum of 30 consecutive days. Extensions are not possible under this visa-free policy. If you need more time, you must apply for a proper visa before traveling.
5
Depart before your 30 days expire
Make sure you leave China before the 30th day. Overstaying can result in fines (500 CNY per day) and a ban from re-entry. Keep your departure card handy for exit immigration.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free policy does not allow extensions. If you need to stay longer than 30 days, you must apply for a tourist visa (L visa) at a Chinese embassy or consulate before you travel. Overstaying even one day can result in a fine of 500 CNY per day and possible entry bans.
You need to apply for a Chinese tourist visa (L visa) before you leave Hungary. This visa typically allows stays of 30, 60, or 90 days depending on what you request and the embassy's decision. Apply at the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre in Budapest. Processing takes about 4-7 working days and costs around 60-100 EUR depending on the type.
Yes, you can enter through any international airport, land border crossing, or seaport that is open to foreign nationals. Major airports include Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Shenzhen. Land borders like Hong Kong-Shenzhen or Macau-Zhuhai also work, but note that Hong Kong and Macau have separate visa policies — you must clear Chinese mainland immigration separately.
If you stay in a hotel, they will register you automatically. If you stay in a private residence (e.g., with friends or family), your host must register you at the local police station within 24 hours of your arrival. Failure to register can result in fines.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined 500 CNY per day for the first 10 days, and up to 10,000 CNY total. In serious cases, you may be detained, deported, and banned from re-entering China for 1-5 years. Always leave on time.
No. The visa-free policy is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits only. You cannot work, study, or engage in paid activities. If you plan to work or study, you must apply for the appropriate visa (Z visa for work, X visa for study) before traveling.
Yes, Hong Kong and Macau have separate visa policies. Hungarian passport holders can visit Hong Kong visa-free for up to 90 days and Macau for up to 30 days. But if you travel from mainland China to Hong Kong or Macau, you must clear immigration for each territory separately. Your mainland China visa-free stay does not cover them.
