Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Hungarian passport needs to be valid only for the length of your stay in Costa Rica. Airlines sometimes enforce a 6-month validity rule, so check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Costa Rica
Immigration officers at San José Airport regularly ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they may check it before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a host with their address and phone number covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Costa Rica doesn't enforce a fixed minimum, but having a credit card or around $500 in cash or bank statements helps if questioned. I've seen officers ask for this at the counter.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check your passport validity at check-in. If you have less than 6 months from your entry date, you will be denied boarding. No exceptions.
Keep digital copies of documents
Save screenshots of your return ticket, accommodation booking, and passport info page on your phone. Also carry a paper copy in your carry-on in case your phone dies.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before travel
Gather your passport (valid 6+ months), print or screenshot your return ticket and first-night accommodation confirmation. Save them on your phone and carry a paper copy as backup.
2
Arrive at Costa Rican immigration
At Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) or Daniel Oduber Quirós Airport (LIR), join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport and supporting documents ready.
3
Present documents and receive entry stamp
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with up to 180 days. No fee is charged.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. You're free to enter Costa Rica.
