Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Cape Verde. No minimum validity beyond your stay is required by law, but airlines sometimes enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Cape Verde
Immigration at Sal and Praia airports checks for a return or onward ticket before letting you through. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight ready — they won't let you in without it.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and contact number. A printed copy speeds things up.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Border officials can request proof you have enough money for your stay. Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least €100 per day — it's rare they ask, but better to have it.Recommended
Visa-free means no pre-application
You don't need to apply for a visa or pay any fee before traveling. Just show up with a valid passport and a return ticket. This applies to tourism and short business visits only.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check this before you board. If your passport has less than 6 months validity from your arrival date, you'll be denied boarding. No exceptions.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Cape Verde airport
You'll land at Amílcar Cabral International Airport (Sal) or Nelson Mandela International Airport (Praia). Go to the immigration hall, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp you in for up to 30 days. The whole process usually takes 10-20 minutes.
2
Prepare documents before the queue
While waiting, have your passport open to the photo page and your return ticket screenshot visible on your phone. If you have a hotel booking, have that ready too. This speeds things up.
3
Exit immigration
After the stamp, collect your luggage from the carousel, then proceed to customs. There's usually nothing to declare unless you're carrying large amounts of cash or restricted goods.
