Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — just enough to cover your stay. Airlines may still enforce the 6-month rule at check-in, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound flight from Japan
Immigration officers at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai often ask for proof of onward travel. Enforcement varies by officer, but having a return or onward ticket avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but it speeds things up if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or bank statement
Have access to at least ¥100,000 (roughly $700 USD) or a credit card with available limit. Immigration may ask how you'll support yourself, especially on longer stays.Recommended

Visit Japan Web saves time
Registering on Visit Japan Web (vjw-lp.digital.go.jp) before your trip lets you skip the paper forms and use a QR code at immigration and customs. It's free and available in English. Do it up to 2 weeks before arrival.
Overstaying is serious
Japanese immigration takes overstaying very seriously. Even a few days can result in a fine, detention, and a ban from re-entering Japan for up to 5 years. Set a reminder to leave before your 90 days are up.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date), book your return/onward ticket, and confirm your first night accommodation. Optionally register on Visit Japan Web (vjw-lp.digital.go.jp) to get a QR code for faster processing.
2
Arrive at a Japanese airport
You'll land at Narita (Tokyo), Haneda (Tokyo), Kansai (Osaka), Chubu (Nagoya), or another international airport. Follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then to 'Foreign Passports'.
3
Go through immigration
Present your passport and completed arrival card (or QR code from Visit Japan Web). The officer may ask about your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a 'Temporary Visitor' status, usually valid for 90 days.
4
Collect luggage and clear customs
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel, then proceed to customs. If you used Visit Japan Web, scan your QR code at the automated kiosk. Otherwise, fill out a paper customs declaration. Green channel for nothing to declare, red channel for dutiable items.
5
Exit the airport
Once through customs, you're free to enter Japan. Activate your eSIM or local SIM, exchange currency if needed, and head to your accommodation.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay cannot be extended. You must leave Japan before the 90 days are up. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa (like a work or student visa) before traveling. Overstaying can result in fines, detention, or a ban from re-entering Japan.
If you're transiting through a Japanese airport and staying airside (not passing immigration), you generally don't need a visa. However, if you need to enter Japan between flights (e.g., to switch airports or stay overnight), you'll need to meet the visa-free entry requirements or have a visa. Always check with your airline for specific transit rules.
You will likely be denied boarding by your airline or refused entry by Japanese immigration. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before traveling.
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or short-term visits only. You cannot engage in paid work or enroll in a course longer than 90 days. For work or study, you need the appropriate visa.
No, it's optional. You can still fill out paper arrival and customs declaration forms on the plane or at the airport. However, using Visit Japan Web can significantly reduce your time in queues, especially at busy airports like Narita and Haneda.
It's not a formal requirement, but immigration officers may ask how you'll support yourself during your stay. Having a credit card or a bank statement showing sufficient funds (around ¥100,000–¥200,000 for a short trip) is a good idea, but rarely requested for Hungarian passport holders.
Contact the nearest Hungarian embassy or consulate immediately. In Tokyo: 3-1-2 Moto-Azabu, Minato-ku, Tokyo 106-0046, phone +81-3-6230-2600. They can issue an emergency travel document. Also file a police report at the nearest police station (koban) — you'll need it for the embassy.
