Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Hungarian passport needs to be valid only for the time you plan to stay in North Macedonia. Airlines at Budapest may still ask for 6 months validity — check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from North Macedonia
Immigration officers at Skopje Airport regularly ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they rarely accept verbal promises.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a signed letter from your host. Border officers may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least €50 per day of your stay. Officers rarely check this for Hungarian passport holders, but it helps if asked.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry, not departure
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive in North Macedonia. If it expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding by the airline or turned away at the border. Check your passport's expiry date before you book anything.
Overstaying is not worth the risk
The 90-day limit is strict and not extendable. Overstaying by even a day can result in a fine (50–100 EUR) and a note on your record. If you overstay repeatedly, you risk a multi-year entry ban to all Schengen and Western Balkan countries.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the border
Whether you fly into Skopje International Airport (SKP) or Ohrid Airport (OHD), or cross by land from Serbia, Kosovo, Bulgaria, or Greece, you'll join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport ready.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your Hungarian passport. The officer will check your photo, validity, and may ask your purpose of visit and how long you're staying. Answer briefly and honestly.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the entry date. No visa sticker, no fee. You're allowed up to 90 days. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when you leave.
4
Exit procedure
When leaving, present your passport again at the border. The officer stamps you out. No exit fee. If you overstay, expect a fine and possible entry ban.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must leave the country (and the Western Balkans region) before day 90 and re-enter later. Overstaying can result in fines and a ban.
No, North Macedonia does not require tourist registration. Your hotel or host will handle any local paperwork. If you're staying in a private home, the host should register you within 24 hours — but this is their responsibility, not yours.
You'll be fined at the border when you leave. The fine is typically around 50–100 EUR, depending on how long you overstayed. Repeated overstays can lead to a temporary entry ban.
Technically, the visa-free regime is for tourism and business visits only. Remote work for a foreign employer is a grey area — many digital nomads do it without issues, but there's no official digital nomad visa yet. If you're caught working for a local company without a work permit, you'll face fines and deportation.
No. If you're just passing through (e.g., flying from Budapest to Skopje and continuing to another country), you don't need a visa as long as you stay airside and don't clear immigration. If you leave the transit area, you'll need to meet the same visa-free entry requirements.
Yes, but it's not straightforward. For stays beyond 90 days, you'd need a temporary residence permit, which requires a reason like work, study, or family reunification. Apply at the nearest North Macedonian embassy before you travel — you can't switch from visa-free to a residence permit while in the country.
Same as at the airport: your valid passport, return ticket (screenshot is fine), and proof of accommodation. Land borders can be slower — expect queues at peak times, especially at Tabanovce (Serbia) and Bogorodica (Greece). Keep your passport handy for multiple checks.
