Hungarian passport holders can enter the Netherlands without a visa for short stays (up to 90 days within any 180-day period). This has been the case since Hungary joined the EU and remains unchanged in 2026. You'll just need a valid passport and proof of onward travel.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Hungarian passport
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in the Netherlands. Since you're entering the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all 29 Schengen countries — your passport doesn't need extra validity beyond your departure date.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration at Schiphol and other Schengen entry points routinely asks for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines like Ryanair and EasyJet check this at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a signed host letter ready. Dutch border officers rarely ask for it, but if you're staying with a friend, they may want to see the address and contact details.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Carry a recent bank statement or enough cash/card to cover €55 per day of your stay. I've never been asked for it entering the Netherlands, but Schengen rules technically require it — better to have a screenshot of your balance ready.Recommended
Schengen Area rules apply
The Netherlands is part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day visa-free stay counts across all Schengen countries combined. If you've already spent 30 days in France, you only have 60 days left for the Netherlands (and any other Schengen country). Keep track using the Schengen calculator.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding. Renew your passport well in advance — Hungarian passport renewal can take 2–4 weeks.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Print or save digital copies of your passport, return ticket, accommodation booking, and insurance policy. Keep them in a separate folder on your phone or in your carry-on.
2
Arrive at the airport and proceed to passport control
At Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam's main international airport), follow signs to 'Paspoortcontrole' (Passport Control). EU/EEA lanes are usually faster, but as a Hungarian passport holder you can use the EU lane. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
3
Present your documents to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: 'How long are you staying?', 'What's the purpose of your visit?', 'Where are you staying?'. Answer briefly and honestly. If asked, show your return ticket and accommodation booking.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. This stamp is your proof of legal entry. Keep your passport safe — you'll need it when leaving.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually no customs check for personal items. Exit through the 'Uitgang' (Exit) doors.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen Area rule. The 180-day window rolls backward, so you need to count your days carefully if you travel frequently.
No, not for tourism. The 90-day limit is strict. If you need to stay longer (e.g., for work or study), you must apply for a national visa or residence permit before your 90 days expire. Contact the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) for details.
No, for stays under 90 days you don't need to register. If you stay longer (e.g., for work or study), you must register with the municipality (gemeente) where you live within 5 days of arrival.
You must have a valid passport for the entire duration of your stay. If it expires, contact the Hungarian embassy or consulate in The Hague immediately to renew it. You may face fines or deportation if you overstay with an expired passport.
No, visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or family visits only. You cannot take up employment. For work, you need a work permit or a residence permit. The exception is short business trips (e.g., attending conferences, negotiating contracts) — but not actual work.
Overstaying is a serious offense. You may be fined, banned from re-entering the Schengen Area for up to 5 years, or both. The fine is typically €300–€500. If you realize you've overstayed, contact the IND immediately to discuss your options.
No, as a Hungarian passport holder you don't need a transit visa for any Schengen airport, including Schiphol. You can stay in the international transit area without passing through passport control. If you need to leave the airport (e.g., for a long layover), you'll need to enter the Schengen Area under the standard visa-free rules.
