Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Hungarian passport needs to be valid only for the time you plan to stay in Peru. Airlines sometimes ask for 6 months validity beyond your departure date, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Peru
Immigration officers at Jorge Chávez Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave within 180 days.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number. Officers rarely ask, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least $1,000 USD or equivalent. Immigration may ask if you look under-resourced.Recommended
Check your stamp
When the immigration officer stamps your passport, look at the handwritten or printed number of days. If it's less than 180, ask them to correct it before you leave the counter. Mistakes happen.
Overstaying is costly
Overstaying even by a day can trigger a fine and a re-entry ban. Set a calendar reminder for 170 days after arrival to make sure you leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration
At Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima (or any land border), follow signs to 'Migraciones' (immigration). Queues can be long — expect 20–60 minutes during peak hours.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport. The officer will check validity, blank pages, and may ask for your return ticket. Answer clearly: how long you're staying, where you're staying, and your purpose (tourism).
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and the number of days granted (usually 180). Check the stamp before walking away — if it says fewer days than you expected, ask politely for correction.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from baggage claim, then pass through customs (green channel if nothing to declare). No additional forms needed.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave Peru before the 180 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines and a ban from re-entry. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa type before your 180 days expire.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month validity is strictly enforced.
No, there is no digital arrival declaration required for Hungarian passport holders. Just show up with your passport and return ticket.
Yes, the same visa-free rules apply at all land borders. You'll go through Peruvian immigration at the border crossing. The 180-day stay resets each time you re-enter, but be careful not to overstay on any single visit.
You'll be fined approximately 1 USD per day overstayed (paid at the immigration office in Lima or at the airport before departure). Overstays can also lead to a temporary ban from re-entering Peru. Avoid it.
No, the visa-free entry covers all of Peru, including tourist sites like Machu Picchu and the Amazon. You just need to buy entry tickets for specific attractions separately.
Technically, the visa-free entry is for tourism only. Remote work for a foreign employer is a gray area — many digital nomads do it without issues, but officially you're not allowed to work for a Peruvian company. If you plan to work for a local employer, you need a work visa.
