Visa on arrival
You can get a 30-day single-entry visa on arrival at Kigali International Airport for $50 USD. Have the exact cash ready — the immigration counter does not give change. You'll also need a passport photo (2x2 inch) and a completed arrival form handed out on the plane.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Passport validity
Your Hungarian passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Rwanda. Airlines at Budapest and connecting hubs check this strictly — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at Kigali routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. A printed copy or a screenshot of your booking works fine. Without one, you risk being refused entry and sent back on the next flight.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host ready. Officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A printed booking confirmation is safest.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient funds for stay
Carry at least $200 USD in cash or have a credit card with a visible balance. Immigration may ask how you plan to support yourself during your stay. ATMs are available at the airport but can be unreliable.Recommended
Cash only for visa on arrival
The visa fee must be paid in cash (USD or EUR). No cards, no mobile payments. Bring small bills to avoid change issues. ATMs in the airport dispense Rwandan francs, not foreign currency.
Yellow fever certificate may be required
If you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk, you'll need to show your yellow fever certificate. Even if coming directly from Hungary, it's wise to carry proof of vaccination — immigration may ask.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Kigali International Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Visa on Arrival'. The queue is usually straightforward. Have your passport, boarding pass, and return ticket ready.
2
Fill out the visa application form
You'll be given a small form to complete — name, passport number, flight details, accommodation address. Fill it in while queuing to save time.
3
Pay the visa fee
Hand over your passport, form, and cash ($30 USD single entry / $50 USD multiple entry). The officer will issue a receipt and stamp your passport.
4
Proceed to passport control
After payment, go to the passport control desk. The officer will check your passport, visa, and may ask about your return ticket and accommodation. Answer clearly.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
Once stamped, collect your bags from baggage claim and walk through customs. No further checks unless you're carrying restricted items.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, you can extend your visa once inside Rwanda. Visit the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration in Kigali (KG 7 Ave, near the airport). Extensions cost around $20 USD and can add up to 30 days. You'll need your passport, a passport photo, and proof of sufficient funds.
Visa on arrival is also available at most land borders, including the main crossings from Uganda (Gatuna), Tanzania (Rusumo), and DR Congo (Goma). The process is the same — fill a form, pay cash, get stamped. Some smaller crossings may not offer it, so stick to major ones.
No. Only cash is accepted at the immigration desk — USD or EUR. Bring small bills (no larger than $50) to avoid change issues. ATMs are available in the arrivals hall, but they dispense Rwandan francs, not foreign currency.
Yes, if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk (including most of Africa and South America). You'll need to show your yellow fever certificate at immigration. If you're coming directly from Hungary, it's not required, but carry proof of vaccination just in case.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined $30 USD per day for the first 30 days, then $50 USD per day after that. You may also be banned from re-entering Rwanda for a period. Always extend before your visa expires.
No. The visa on arrival is strictly for tourism, business meetings, or short visits. If you plan to work, you need a proper work visa arranged before travel. Working on a tourist visa can lead to deportation and a ban.
Yes, you can apply for an e-visa online before travel through the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration website. It costs the same as the visa on arrival ($30 single entry) and takes about 3 business days to process. This can save time at the airport if you prefer to skip the queue.
