Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Tajikistan. Airlines at Budapest Airport will check this before you board. No minimum validity beyond your stay is required by Tajik law.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Tajikistan
Immigration officers at Dushanbe International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of Tajikistan ready. This applies even for short stays.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you are staying. A hotel confirmation or an invitation letter from your host covers this. Keep a copy on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Officials can request evidence of sufficient funds. Carry a bank statement or a credit card showing you have at least $50 USD per day of your stay. Cash in USD or euros is widely accepted.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding even if you have a visa.
GBAO permit required for the Pamir Highway
If you plan to travel to the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (home to the famous Pamir Highway), you need a separate permit. Apply online at evisa.tj or get it in Dushanbe. Without it, you'll be stopped at checkpoints.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Dushanbe International Airport
Most Hungarian travellers fly into Dushanbe (DYU). After deplaning, follow signs to 'Passport Control'. There are separate queues for Tajik citizens and foreigners — use the foreigner queue.
2
Present your passport and ticket
Hand over your passport and any supporting documents (return ticket, accommodation booking). The officer will check your passport validity and stamp you in. The process usually takes 2–5 minutes.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim. Then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no dutiable goods. Customs officers may randomly check bags.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. If you need to stay longer than 30 days, you must apply for a visa at a Tajik embassy before travel. Overstaying can result in fines and potential deportation.
For stays under 30 days, no registration is required. If you stay longer (with a visa), you must register with the Ministry of Internal Affairs within 10 days of arrival. Since the visa-free period is 30 days and not extendable, this doesn't apply to visa-free travellers.
You need a special GBAO permit in addition to your visa-free entry. This permit is not included in the visa-free policy. You can apply for it online via the Tajikistan e-visa portal (evisa.tj) or get it at the OVIR office in Dushanbe. The permit costs around $20 and takes 1–3 business days to process.
Yes, you can enter via land borders like Oybek (from Uzbekistan) or Kyzyl-Art (from Kyrgyzstan). The same visa-free rules apply — just make sure your passport is valid and you have a return ticket. Land crossings can be slower than airports, so expect 30–60 minutes at immigration.
No, departure tax is included in your airline ticket. You don't need to pay anything extra at the airport when leaving.
The local currency is the Tajikistani somoni (TJS). US dollars are widely accepted for exchange and some hotels. Bring crisp, new $100 bills for the best exchange rates. ATMs are available in Dushanbe but may be unreliable elsewhere. Credit cards are accepted only in upscale hotels and restaurants in the capital.
No mandatory vaccinations for entry. However, the CDC and WHO recommend routine vaccines plus hepatitis A, typhoid, and rabies for most travellers. Check with your doctor 4–6 weeks before travel.
